The lastest squab that is learning to fly has been missing for a day. 5 minutes ago Sands called down from the roof that Moreno had found him - in the BBQ. Seems that when the wind blew the faulty door off yesterday and I shoved it back on I locked the RockDove in the BBQ!!!
He must have been there for 24+ hours. He is now happily reunited with Pedro - and Moreno wants to know why he can't eat him as he found him!!!
- he just loves to play with the feather duster when we clean,
- now we aren't feeding doves on roof as much a few are coming down to my study window to feed, which of course he loves!, and
- he goes mad with an old sock of mine. He is almost like a dog. In this movie he is jumping through the window after the sock, carrying it around the balcony and in through our bedroom patio windows, before dropping it back at my feet! I am afraid the quality isn't that good - but they are short and funny!
And as it has been a while here are a few pictures of Moreno and the Rock Doves:
Here are three movies that we took right at the end of 2006:
1. We have Moreno on Christmas day, his first. He loved all the decorations and his presents, but I think he preferred the wrappping paper more. Over the Christmas period we found out he enjoyed fillet steak, turkey and smoked salmon. No surprise there then!
2. The movie of Moreno on the chair was meant to be an action movie as just before I started filming he was really active. He has his moments, but seemed very aware that there was a camera on him.
3. The picture of us feeding the doves on the roof is a long one, but has some great close up footage.
Enjoy
On the sad side we have lost one of the rock doves, sharon :-(
Sands noticed that she hadn't been around for a while which was strange as she was so young, and then she noticed what looked like a dead dove trapped behind some wire netting on the cliff at the back of the apartment.
Yesterday Chris went and had a closer look and it looks very much like poor little Sharon has got trapped and died, and now the Kestrels are pecking away at her. All very sad and distressing as we can't get to her to bury her and little Bruce seems sad and lost without her. It is hard to say how Pedro and Camilla feel as they had already started to encourage them to leave the nest as Camilla is egg sitting again, but it does seem like they are somewhat subdued and Pedro is hanging around the nest more during the day.
I know it is "life" but it is very sad. Hopefully she didn't suffer. I think that is she had got attacked or stuck we would have heard any fight or the other doves crying for help, so it seems that she may just have got stuck and died of shock.
That is now three that we have lost, but she was by far the closest to us having been born in the balcony :-(She really was very beautiful and full of character. In the meantime Bruce is growing into a very handsome chap, although is still very young, and tends to get lef behind a little at the moment:
He remains fascinated by the doves (hence sitting in the sink as they nest the other side of the wall), my computer stuff, and playing with toilet roll (her he proudly shows of a whole roll he unravelled in one go)
As for the rest of our life nothing much is happening which is just how I like it! Sands is playing golf and seeing her girlfriends. We seem to have xmas sorted already which is a little early but as there aren't many options here and a lot of people are away this year it was pretty easy. Sands and I will have a nice meal at home on Christmas Eve, then on Christmas Day Sands will go for a drink with Emma in the local bar whilst I help Pam and John prepare lunch which we will eat at their apartment along with Moreno and their 3 cats. Moreno has met the younger one, and totaly won the ensuing territorial battle :-)
